TL;DR: The cheapest way to get a real small business website in the Chicago area right now is a one-time build from SiteMe Chicago (from $549) or ExColo ($750 for five pages), if you can live without ongoing help. If you want someone else to host, update, and fix the site, managed plans run from $49 to $199 a month at Web Stack Experts, Visionary Pixel, SparkNCode, and Intuico Digital. Monthly plans cost more over three years, so the real question is whether you will maintain the site yourself.

A quick disclosure: we are Intuico Digital, and we are one of the seven companies below. We kept our own entry to the same facts as everyone else's, and on price alone we are not the cheapest option on this list. Every price comes from each company's own website, checked on October 31, 2026. Prices change, so confirm the current number before you sign anything.

What "affordable" means for a small business website

Small business websites in Chicago are sold three ways, and comparing them on sticker price alone gives the wrong answer.

  • One-time build. You pay once for the design and build, then pay separately (or not at all) for hosting and changes. Lowest total cost, but every later fix is a new invoice or your own evening.
  • Managed monthly plan. A setup fee (sometimes $0) plus a monthly payment that covers hosting, security, and some amount of content updates. Higher three-year cost, little work for you.
  • Custom quote. Priced per project, usually from a few thousand dollars, plus a care plan. Right when you need booking, ecommerce, integrations, or a design a template cannot hold.

How we picked these seven

Each company on this list had to meet four rules:

  1. Based in the Chicago area or built around serving it.
  2. Prices published on its own website, so you can check them without a sales call.
  3. Offers aimed at small and local businesses, not enterprise rebuilds.
  4. A real option for a service business with five pages or fewer.

Well-known Chicago agencies that only quote on request are left out. They may be good, but "affordable" is not something you can check without a published number.

The seven companies

1. ExColo: lowest total cost for a five-page site

ExColo is an IT and hosting company in Naperville that has worked with Chicago-area businesses since 2010. Its web design page lists four fixed prices. The Company Site is five pages with a content editor for $750, paid as a $375 deposit and $375 before launch. Hosting with a .com is $86.40 a year, and care is optional. The sites are hand-built rather than WordPress, and the design work is done by Stroonka, a studio run by ExColo's founder. English and Spanish sites are both offered.

Good fit if: you want the lowest three-year cost and are comfortable asking for changes one at a time.

2. SiteMe Chicago: low build price with cheap maintenance

SiteMe Chicago starts custom sites at $549 and offers maintenance at $34 a month for seasonal updates, small text and image changes, and monitoring. Final price depends on the size and features of the site, and SiteMe says most sites are delivered in three to five days.

Good fit if: you need a small site fast and want inexpensive help with minor edits. Ask what hosting costs, since the build price does not say.

3. Web Stack Experts: cheapest managed monthly plan

Web Stack Experts charges $499 once for design and setup and a required $49 a month after that. The setup includes copywriting, basic SEO, connecting your domain and social profiles, and cross-browser testing. The monthly fee covers updates and support, and you can make your own edits too. There is no contract, and extra pages are $100 each.

Good fit if: you want a managed site at the lowest monthly price and like the option to leave anytime.

4. Visionary Pixel: five pages with local SEO basics

Visionary Pixel is a founder-led studio in Schaumburg. Its Website Starter plan is $80 a month with a $495 setup fee on a 12-month agreement. It covers up to five pages, hosting, SSL, maintenance, and local SEO foundations, and it is aimed at contractors and local service businesses.

Good fit if: you need a few more pages than a starter plan usually allows and are fine committing to a year.

5. SparkNCode: no money down

SparkNCode sells websites as a service across Chicago, the suburbs, Lake County, and the North Shore. There is no upfront fee, plans start at $150 a month, and the price covers the build, hosting, updates, and SEO. It also promises a free redesign every 24 months and says you always own your domain and content.

Good fit if: cash flow matters more than three-year cost. Get the contract length and cancellation terms in writing, since the page does not list them.

6. Intuico Digital: website plus local search from one team

That's us. Our Starter plan is $199 a month plus a $199 setup fee, with a 12-month minimum. It covers a preset design of two to three pages, hosting, SSL, a contact form, basic on-page SEO, maintenance, and up to 30 minutes of content edits a month. The Growth plan ($399–$599 a month) adds pages, an AI chatbot, and analytics, and custom builds start at $2,500. The full breakdown is in our website pricing guide.

On published price, we are the most expensive managed plan here. The reason to pick us is the work around the website. Google Business Profile optimization and local SEO are things we do every week, and the site is built for them from the start.

Next Level QC: separate pages for each program, built to match how parents search.

The clearest example is Next Level QC, a gymnastics and cheer gym in the Quad Cities. We rebuilt its site with one page per program and local signals for each nearby city. In under three months it went from minimal search coverage to roughly two dozen #1 rankings. The case study has the details.

Good fit if: you want the website and your Google presence handled by the same people, and the extra monthly cost is worth not managing two vendors.

7. Millennial Web Development: custom WordPress with care plans

Millennial Web Development has built custom WordPress sites in Chicago since 2014 and lists more than 300 launches. Builds are quoted per project. Maintenance starts at $79 a month and includes daily backups, security and performance monitoring, and weekly plugin updates.

Good fit if: you have outgrown a starter site and need custom WordPress work, with a care plan priced separately.

Monthly plan or one-time build?

Over three years, the gap is large. ExColo's five-page site costs about $1,009 in that time, while the managed plans above run from $2,263 to $7,363. Here is what the difference pays for:

  • Updates. New hours, a new service, a price change, a seasonal promo. On a one-time build, each one is a request and often a bill.
  • Security and hosting. Someone has to renew certificates, apply updates, and notice when the site goes down.
  • Time. If you or someone on staff will keep the site current, a one-time build is the better deal. If nobody will, a managed plan stops the site from going stale.

A simple test: think about the last time your hours, services, or prices changed. If updating the website took more than a week, pay for a plan that includes updates.

Red flags in cheap web design

  • The domain is not in your name. Register it to the business, under a login you control, before any work starts.
  • No written answer on cancellation. On any monthly plan, ask what you keep if you leave: the domain, the content, the design, or nothing.
  • "SEO included" with no detail. Basic setup means titles, descriptions, and a sitemap. It does not mean ongoing work to rank. Ask which one you are buying.
  • Page limits you will hit in a month. A two-page plan is fine for a single-service business. A plumber with six services needs six service pages to show up for six kinds of searches.
  • No live examples. Ask for three sites they built for businesses like yours, and load them on your phone.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What is the total I will pay in the first year, including setup, hosting, and the domain?
  2. How many pages are included, and what does each extra page cost?
  3. Who writes the copy, and how many revisions are included?
  4. How many content updates a month are included, and how fast are they done?
  5. How long is the contract, and what happens to the site if I cancel?
  6. Will you set up Google Analytics, Search Console, and my Google Business Profile link?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a small business website cost in Chicago?

Among Chicago-area companies that publish prices, a small business website costs from about $550 to $750 as a one-time build, or $49 to $199 a month on a managed plan with a setup fee of $0 to $499. Custom projects start in the low thousands.

Is a monthly website plan worth it?

It is worth it when nobody on your team will keep the site updated. It is not worth it when you can make your own changes and just need a solid site built once.

Who owns my website on a monthly plan?

It depends on the company. Some say you always own your domain and content, and others keep the design and code until you buy it out. Get the answer in writing before you sign.

Not sure which model fits?

The website cost calculator gives you a rough range in a couple of minutes. If you would rather talk it through, send your current site or a short description through the project form. We will tell you honestly whether one of our plans fits, or whether a one-time build from someone on this list makes more sense.
